How to Nail Karaoke: Your Tips for First-Timers

A red-haired woman passionately singing karaoke into a microphone, with a beer glass on a wooden bar and a neon "ROCK" sign glowing red in the background.

Alright, Garden City. You’ve seen the legends on our stage, and you’ve felt that energy. Maybe you’ve even thought to yourself, “I could do that.” But then the butterflies kick in.

The good news? You absolutely can, and we’re here to help.

This isn’t about being a professional singer; it’s about having a killer time and owning your moment. Consider this your roadmap to karaoke glory.

Tip #1: Practice Makes Perfect (or at Least, Less Awkward)

Find your anthem ahead of time. Before you come in, take some time at home to go through your favorite songs. Find one that you know by heart, or at least one that you’re comfortable with. This will save you a lot of time and stress when you get here. You’ll be able to step up to the mic with confidence, and the crowd will love you for it. Even practicing a simple dance move in front of the mirror can give you that extra bit of confidence.

Remember, our catalog is full of thousands of rock anthems and hidden gems, so you’ve got plenty of ground to cover.

Tip #2: Warm Up Your Pipes

Don’t just jump in cold. Before you get on stage, grab a drink to loosen up. Something cold and classic from our Happy Hour menu is a great choice. The liquid courage will help you get into the groove and make you feel like a true rockstar. Our stage is fueled by the energy of our drinks, so don’t be afraid to find your liquid courage before you take the stage. You could also hum along to the songs being played to get your vocal cords ready.

Some drink ideas to get you started: A $2.50 Bud Light from our happy hour, or maybe a $9.50 “Welcome to the Jungle Juice” to get your confidence soaring.

Tip #3: Your Stage, Your Anthem

Pick a song you love. This is your moment, so pick a song that makes you feel confident. Don’t worry about what the crowd wants to hear. If you know all the words and the melody by heart, you’re already halfway there. Whether it’s a power ballad, a punk rock classic, or a high-energy pop hit, the stage is yours. The best part is that our crowd is here to support you, no matter what you sing.

Some song ideas for first-timers:“Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey (a guaranteed crowd-pleaser), “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” by Joan Jett (short, high energy), “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi (a duet or a solo, it’s always a hit), or “Son of a Sinner” by Jelly Roll (a modern country-rock anthem that’s a perfect fit for a first-timer).

Tip #4: Mic Technique Matters

Hold it close, but not too close. Holding the microphone too far away will make you sound quiet, but holding it too close can cause feedback. Hold the mic about an inch or two away from your mouth, and you’ll be good to go. This will make you sound clear and confident, and the crowd will be able to hear every word. The secret is to hold the mic like a pro, and our new sound system will do the rest.

Tip #5: Own the Stage

Don’t just stand there. This isn’t a concert; it’s a show! Move around, use your hands, and make eye contact with the crowd. They’re there to have a good time, and they’ll love you for bringing the energy. The stage is your playground, so have fun with it. Remember, every performance is a unique show, and our crowd is ready to be a part of it.

Tip #6: Embrace the Imperfections

It’s okay to mess up. The crowd isn’t there to judge you; they’re there to have a good time. If you mess up a lyric or miss a note, just laugh it off and keep going. The best karaoke performances aren’t always the perfect ones, they’re the ones that are the most fun. The best thing you can do is to just have fun with it, and our crowd will love you for it.

Your Stage Awaits

So, now that you’ve got the tips, there’s only one thing left to do: come and experience the truth for yourself. Grab your crew, pick your poison, and show Garden City what you’ve got. This isn’t just karaoke; it’s a legendary night waiting to happen.

We’re here to make karaoke legends EVERY TUESDAY through SATURDAY, starting at 9 PM! Find us at 33729 Ford Rd., Garden City, MI 48135.
